South Korea's New Standard for Energy Storage Batteries Formally Implements Portable Outdoor Energy Storage Power Supply under Control

On March 20th, the Korean Institute of Technology and Standards issued a 2023-0027 announcement, announcing the new standard KC 62619 for energy storage batteries. Compared to the 2019 version of KC 62619, the changes in the new version mainly include the following aspects: terminology definition and international standard alignment; The scope of application has been expanded, and mobile energy storage devices have been included in the control, making it more clear that portable outdoor energy storage power sources are also within the scope; The scope of application is modified to be between 500kWh and 300kWh; Chapter supplements the requirements for battery system design; Add requirements for system locks; Add EMC requirements; Add a thermal spread testing program that controls thermal runaway through laser contact heating.

Compared to the international standard IEC62619:2022, the differences in the new version of KC 62619 are reflected in: coverage: in the international standard, the scope of application is industrial batteries; KC 62619:2022 specifies that its scope is applicable to energy storage batteries, and specifies that mobile/fixed energy storage batteries, camping power supplies, and mobile electric vehicle chargers belong to the standard scope. Sample quantity requirement: In Article 6.2, the IEC standard requires a sample quantity of R (R is 1 or more); In the new version of KC 62619, three samples are required for each cell test and one sample is required for the battery system.

At the same time, the new version of KC 62619 has added Appendix E to refine the evaluation method for battery systems below 5kWh. The announcement shall take effect from the date of publication, and the old version of KC 62619 standard will be abolished one year after the announcement takes effect.
